Dear Diane:
I am a researcher of the family of Martin May, born circa 1808. In my research, I came across another Martin May who was possibly born in the 1790's .He married the widow of John Clark, Rachel Ward on May 8, l813 in Rowan C. NC.
It appears that John and Rachel had several children(7 or 8) so I have been told. Information provided by Davie Co.
library(Davie Co. was formed out of Rowan Co in 1836) indicates that Martin May who married Rachel adopted the Children of John& Rachel Clark.I do not know that he had their names changed to May, but do not think so.
The 1820 Rowan Co census shows Martin & wife with possibly 10 children. The 1830 Rowan Co, NC census shows Martin (age 30-40) with 8 children in the home. The 1840 Davie Co, NC censusshows Martin(age 50-60) with 2 males and l female in thehome. No record was found for him in 1850.
After their marriage, deeds show that on July 10,1819
Wesley Clark sold Martin May his sharein estate of his father John B. Clark ,property on Bear Creek. On Feb 9, 1823, Benjamin Clark of Rowan sold to his stepfather, MartinMay his share in property on Bear Creek from estate of his father, John B.Clark. On Dec. 28, 1835, Sarah Clark
sold to Martin May, her share of estate of her father John B. Clark, located on Bear Creek. This transaction was witnessed by Martha Beck, Isham Clark, Benjamin Clark, Eli
S.Clark and Ira W. Clark.
I believe that Martin born in late 1790 is related to my line of Mays of NC since he lived in the same areaand my earliest known May was Martin May born circa 1750-60 either in Va. or NC. I do hope that this info helps you. I really donot know any more about John B. Clark, but if I can be of help in any way, you should contact me.
