Ace,
My computer is off line right now and in repair so I'm sending this from the local library.Because of that I don't have my files handy but from memory here goes.
In 1909 in Decatur County, Iowa a family reunion was held at the home of David Clark, the oldest son of Samuel and Lucinda Shelton Clark. Most of the family were together for the first time in many years. The gathering was newsworthy enough that there was a writeup in the local paper.(I believe there is a copy of the article on the Decatur County Genweb site.)It doesn't state who provided the information for the article but it would probably be David since it was at his residence and he was the oldest son there. The article states that the father of the family, Samuel, was the son of William Clark and Elizabeth Mills. That they had married on board a ship of which Elizabeth's father was the captain. They then came to the United States "over a hundred years ago."They traveled with all the belongings they owned from New York to Alabama.
There is more to the article, but this is the major parts. Two things seem clear to me.First, the description of the background of Elizabeth and the trip to Alabama seems a bit exagerated, but second, I am convinced that David and his siblings knew first hand who their grandparents were.At first, I wondered if there could be a generation left out, but did locate a marriage of a William Clark to an Elizabeth Mills in England in 1806.The marriage record was recorded less than 20 miles from a large seaport.
It would seem that the children of Samuel and Lucinda were all born in Kentucky although some census records have said Alabama. If I remember my earlier research right Alabama didn't become a state until after the births took place and the family moved to Illinois, so that may explain the discrepancies.
Allof the supporting documentation for this is in my hard file and I will have to go searching.I've moved three times since I last worked on the line.
Ace, I would appreciate your response to what I have outlined.
Also what is the documentation for suggesting David Clark Jr. as the father of Samuel? That may hold clues that would expand our knowledge of the family.
Looking forward to your reply!
Don
