Thanks for the quick reply. I have "my" Samuel born about 1785. Family notes say in Vermont but I cannot find anything to substantiate this. Samuel had at least one son, Carriel, who emigrated to Michigan about 1835. Carriel was born in 1807 in Deerfield, New York. NowI don't know if this is Deerfield (village) or county. I have no information at all on Carriel's mother - assuming it's Samuel's wife. Also, I believe Carriel lived for a time in or around Lenawee County which is in southeast Michigan - just north of the Ohio border. Carriel's oldest son, Elias, was born 12 Jul 1832 in Ontario Co., NY. And you're right, I've been told it's a Clark tradition to name sons after forefathers. I named my son Aaron after my great grandfather who was Carriel's grandson. I would like to converse with Ann - the researcher you mentioned.
