Interesting mystery.I tried to follow with census records. I did notice that Mary Crow age 53 in 1880 had been bedridden for 20 years.Possible that H.L. Jeffers was just a retired roomer, and had money to help out.His name was Henry Langford Jeffers. There are some pictures of him and his sons on the internet. I couldn't find where his sons married, but they seemed to do well in life.

According to the 1840 census, there was an H.L. Jeffers in Edgefield SC.A few doors away was S.D. Clark with two males 1(15-20) and 1 (20-30) no females.Maybe there is a connection there. Also the 1830 census in Edgefield has a Thomas Anderson, who I think was the father of Eliza Ann, H.L;'s wife.
