Henry Clark(e) Family of Henry Co VA
My ancestor is Henry Clark(e) of Henry County VA. He appears on page 28 of the 1820 Henry Co VA census ths way: 120001-21110.
He died in 1828. I have images of his will document and a transcription of it at [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/clarkhenrywill.html].
His grandson, William Henry Clark, at age 80, wrote a booklet titled "Genealogy of the Clark and Pace Families" in which he recorded what he remembered of his ancestors. He had a remarkably good memory since most of what he wrote has been verified. A transcription of the booklet, together with corrections and additional notes is available at [http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gensoup/clark.html].
Briefly, Henry Clark(e) of Henry County VA was married twice; first to Willie Ann Nunn (according to Clark's booklet). Henry and Willie Ann had nine childrenbefore she died. I am descended from the ninth child, Samuel Clark. Henry then married Cassandra Philpot, daughter of Charles Philpot, on 22 Aug 1801. Together they had eight children.
Samuel Clark married Nancy Gatewood Pace, daughter of William Ingram Pace and his wife Sallie Nunn Pace. Samuel and Nancy were married in Barren County KY on 22 Dec 1818. Together they had seven children. Their fourth was a son, William Henry Clark, who wrote the booklet identified above. Their last was a daughter, Nancy Hayden Clark, born 9 Sep 1827 in Smith County TN. She is my ancestor. Samuel died sometime in late 1828 for Nancy took the children and returned to Barren County to live near her father at that time. Samuel was a tanner by trade, and I speculate that he died in an accident. Tanning could be dangerous.
Nancy Hayden Clark married Austin Washington Bowles on 1 Jan 1846 in Barren County KY. They are my great-great grandparents.
Returning to Henry Clark(e) of Henry Co VA, I have been told, without documentation, that he was born on 19 Nov 1759 in what was to become Henry County. If I recall correctly, at that time it would have been part of Halifax County, and then later part of Pittsylvania County.
The same undocumented source indicated that Henry died on 12 Feb 1828 at his home on Clay Lick Creek in Henry County. I do know that he signed his will on the 25 Jan 1828.
I am seeking information about the ancestry of Henry Clark(e) of Henry Co Va.
Thanks,
Charlie Hartley
