Well the old light finally went on in this old head. I did a search in the 1880 MI census using soundex instead of exact spelling and found the connection, so here it goes.

Found in Ancestry.com census images, 1880 Michigan, Sanilac Co., Flynn Twp E.D. 331 or 339, Page 8
Roll MIT9-605 Image 633
This clears up some but not all of it.
