Nathaniel and Deborah GERMOND Clapp m. ca 1790 in Dutchess Co., NY
Posted by: Paul Newell (ID *****3766) Date: January 31, 2009 at 11:46:23
  of 1652

I am searching for information about the dates and places of death and burial for Nathaniel Clapp and wife Deborah GERMON Clapp.

Reportedly, Nathaniel Clapp was born ca 1765 in Dutchess Co., New York, the son of Joseph and Mercy CARPENTER Clapp. Reportedly, Deborah GERMON(D) was born ca 1762 in Dutchess Co., New York, the daughter of James and Sarah HAFF Germond.

Nathaniel Clapp and Deborah GERMON were likely married in Dutchess County and a short time later they removed to Saratoga Co., New York. In 1789, Nathaniel Clapp is on the tax list for Stillwater, Saratoga Co., New York.

In 1790, Nathaniel Clap is enumerated in Stillwater for the Federal census. That census lists 2 males > 16, 2 males < 16, and 4 females. The known children of Nathaniel and Deborah GERMON Clapp were all born after 1790, so there may have been two families residing in the Clapp household that year.

1800 – I have not found a record of Nathaniel and Deborah in the 1800 census.

Bradford County history states “Nathaniel Clapp, a Quaker, came from Livingstone Manor, N.Y. to Athens, settling near Spanish Hill before 1808.”

In 1808, Nathaniel Clapp is on the tax list for Tioga Twp., Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania.

In 1810, Nathaniel Clapp and family were enumerated in the Federal census of Athens, Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania, as follows:

Clap Nathaniel 02001.10101
2 Males 10-15              Nathaniel (b. 1795); Allen (b. 1798)
1 Male 45+              Nathaniel Clapp (b. ca 1765)
1 Female < 10              Elizabeth (b. ca 1801)
1 Female 16-25       Deborah (b. 1793)
1 Female 45+              Deborah GERMON Clapp (b. bef 1765)

The persons named in the transcript of the 1810 census record, above, are based on my research of the Nathaniel Clapp family history.

Nathaniel Clapp, Sr. is not on the 1812 tax list of Athens Township when Bradford County, Pennsylvania was created. There are no persons of surname Clap(p) on that tax list. That suggests Nathaniel Clapp was deceased or had removed from the region by 1812.

The next record of a Clapp person in Athens is the 1816 tax assessment. It lists Nathaniel Clapp but there is no suffix (junior or senior) included with his name, indicating Nathaniel, Sr. is likely deceased by that time. Nathaniel, Jr. was age 20 years by the time of the 1816 tax assessment.

I am searching for information about the dates and places of death and burial for Nathaniel Clapp and wife Deborah GERMON Clapp.

Any help with the needed information would be much appreciated.
