A biography/family history of Charles H. Clapp is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, page 991.
Charles Clapp was born, 5 Jun 1883, son of Peleg F. and Mary (Manson) Clapp. The Clapps were an old New England family who came from England and settled in Massachusetts in the early 18th century. Peleg F. Clapp was born in 1823 in Scituate, MA, grew up and was married there, and became a successful contractor and builder in Boston. He died in 1893. Mary Manson Clapp was born at Scituate, MA, 1845, and died at Boston, MA, in 1890. Children of Peleg and Mary: Charles H. (MT); Mary (Boston); Harry (patent attorney, Chicago); James (architect in Boston); Philip (public accountant, Boston); Lucy (Mrs. Howard W. Read, Benton Harbor, MI).
Charles H. attended public schools of Boston and graduated from high school in 1901. He received a B.S. degree in mining engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1905. In 1905-07, Charles was an instructor in mining and geology at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, and was assistant state geologist. From 1907-1910, he was instructor of geology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at the same time carrying on graduate studies and received a degree Doctor of Philosophy in 1910. In the meantime, 1908-1913, he was geologist for Canadian Geological Survey, done at Columbia. 1913-1916, geologist at the State University of Arizona; also was the state geologist. He moved to the Montana State School of Mines, Butte, MT, as professor of geology; 1918 made acting president and in 1919, president.
On 19 Apr 1911, Devil's Lake, ND, Charles married Miss Mary Brennan, daughter of M.H. and Mary (Coyle) Brennan. Clapp children: Daniel, b. 28 Jan 1912; Michael, b. 28 Oct 1913; Mary, b. 16 Feb 1916; Francis, b. 28 Oct 1917; Lucy, b. 18 Nov 1919.
