Hi Ellen and all looking for info on George Gilson Clapp...

I googled his name the other night at 2 am while working on my family tree and came across an article in the JSTOR collection. To access the site you must have access to a library or organization that is affiliated with JSTOR. Lucky me, my son goes to Laurentian University in Sudbury and was able to get a copy of the article through the university library system.

The article is entitled "Early American Embroidery" by Margaret Jeffery and it is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin, pp 120-125 doi:10.2307/3257170. In the six page article is a picture of a set of bed hangings that was the work of the three successive wives of Dr. George Gilson Clapp. The article talks about Dr. George being an English physician who, after finishing his medical studies in London, traveled for twenty years in Europe and the Near East, resumed his practice in England, and finally, about 1666, came to this country (USA) and settled in Westchester, New York. The Museum received the hangings from Rogers Fund in 1944. I have always wanted to believed that George Gilson Clapp existed (he would be my 8 great grandfather). I take this article as proof that he did. Nancy
