Hi Jude: Thanks for your reply. The William Merritt whose Will you cite mentioning Cornbury et al was my ancestor and (presumably) the husband of Tamar who predeceased him so she is not mentioned. His daughter Mary (whom you note) is my ancestress. He married (2nd) Elizabeth Wixon, so -no- he is not the one who married Mary Clapp in 1792. As it turns out, since my posting I reviewed the Clapp chapter in "Settlers of the Beekman Patent" and see that the Cornbury I asked about - that is, the one in the 1790 & 1800 Dutchess co. census - is the son of Gilbert Clapp, as you also note. As such, he is too young to be my Tamar's father, but I still suspect the families are related. If ANYONE has info on the descendents of the 1st Cornbury - son of John of Rye - it would be most welcome, as it seems all the documentation has been on just the one line!
