There are 2 distinct lines of Clapps from pre-Revolutionary times. There were New England Clapps who arrived in the 1600's from England who tended to move east. My line were Klaps who arrived from Germany in 1720. They moved south and west from North Carolina. I think both groups passed through Il. I know Benjamin Clapp was with the Mormons when they were in Nauvoo IL about 1845 but I don't think he left anyone there. John and George were family names in both lines.
