Sounds like the same Clephane family that my Catherine McDonald married into! Catherine's father was born 1807 in Logierait, Perthshire, Scotland, and I can't help but think the Scots sort of stuck together. So you haven't heard of a James Clephane who would have been born in the late 1830's? I found your Thomas and Sarah and Thomas G. and Clarrance (?) in the 1850 Campbell Co. census but no James found in the vicinity....
