James Claiborne (Buller(5), Augustine(4), Thomas(3-2), William(1) was born about 1780. He married (bond 28 Jan 1803. Sarah Brooking, daughter of Vivion Brooking, who was born about 1785.
He acquired 150 acres in Dinwiddie County from his father in 1802 but sold it in 1804. On 10 September 1803 Vivion Brooking sold James Claiborne 150 acres in Amelia County and on 26 September 1803 made to him a gift of five slaves "for the advancement of his daughter Sarah." They moved to Hancock County, GA, where on 15 Dec 1808 he purchased for $1500 143 3/4 acres on the Watery fork of Buffalo Creek with a mill. He lived briefly in Washington Co., GA, in 1813 but returned to Hancock County where he purchased 112 1/2 acres on the waters of Little Ogeechee on 10 May 1813. He was a member of the Grand Jury in 1819 and 1821. He suffered financial difficulties in later years and on 13 February 1841 mortgaged his entire estate to provide for the pro rata payment of his debts. He later lived in Putnam Co., GA.
