John Claflin was from New York. He graduated from the College of City of New York in 1869 with A.B. Degree. After graduation he traveled extensively, but in 1870, after the early death of his two older brothers, he entered his father's wholesale dry goods house in New York City. He continued in his father's business, The H.B. Claflin Co., New York for many years as president. The corporation in 1890 capitalized at $9,000,000. Later he consolidated his interests into holding companies - the Associated Merchants Co. in 1900, the United Mercantile Co. in 1903, and the United Dry Goods in 1909. In spite of many successes, Claflin's organization experienced several storms during two generations of expansion, and on June 23, 1914, the H. B. Claflin Co. went into receivership. He voluntarily turned over the major part of his private fortune to meet the claims of creditors and aided in corporate reorganization, thus preventing losses which would have accompanied forced liquidation of his companies. The business never recovered, and in 1926 Claflin's, Inc. (the successor to the bankrupt H. B. Claflin Co.) was voluntarily liquidated.
This can be found in the "Dictionary of American Biography" Supplement 2 NY Scribners 1958. It goes on to say that during his lifetime he devoted himself to many interests. He served as director or trustee of some nine life and fire insurance companies and six large banks. Interested in currency reform, he headed special committees on the subject, including that of the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York, of which he was president in 1912-14. He also traveled widely in the U.S. and abroad, sometimes in little explored places; in 1877 he made his way across the South American continent near the equator. On this trip he was accompanied by a single white companion;he entered the South American continent at Peru and made his way to the mouth of the Amazon. He resided in "Lindenwold," Morristown,NJ. He was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY.
He possessed great organizing ability; it must be stated that in the early part of the twentieth century he was the leading dry goods merchant in the United States! His later difficulties as well as his brilliant successes constitute a significant chapter in the history of American marketing.
