Dear Carroll, please excuse the delay, I just found your query. Evidently I am not getting notices.

Based on the little I know, which is next to nothing, I give the Nicholas who married Anne Sperry a birthdate c. 1780, as both parties seem to have been of age. This would give him a life of some sixty years, fairly common for his generation. He presumably came out of the MD Clabaughs, but don't know if he was born in MD or VA. I just recently ran across the tombstone transcript on a site dedicated to Fulton Co IL where he settled. There was no photo, and I suspect a little worn stump of a stone is all that is left.

In the Maryland Oaths of Fidelity, 1777, I find 5 adult Clabaughs; Charles and John jr. in Montgomery Co., Frederick and John in Frederick Co., and Martin in Washington Co., Martin spelled Claubough.

An area man, Charles Clabaugh, did his best with a family history some decades ago, and he mentions William and Mary who lived in Fred. co MD before the RW, and had 9 sons. The youngest was William b. 1783, who was orphaned very young. He thought my Nicholas could belong to this family. However, he finds this Wm in Ross co OH, where he died 1838, and there was a William living next to my Nicholas in Franklin Co OHio c. 1830. Don't know that it was the same Wm.

Interestingly, I do not find this Wm. of the 9 sons in the MD Oaths of Fidelity. I descend from the first born of Nicholas and Anna, Elizabeth, b. 1806, who married in Franklin co OH. Her name is spelled on the register as Claughbeaugh. I'm not sure I would have backtracked this couple were it not for local memory.

Nicholas and Anna raised only 7 children, do not know how many were born to them. However, the first son was named JOHN, which I think is a strong clue that his father was named John. The second son I believe named after her father, Samuel Sperry Clabaugh, which is still a hunch as I haven't verified her family. The last son was Nicholas H.

Up on the Monocacy was a Hedges family from whom I descend. They lived neighbors to the original couple Frederick & Mary. I learn to my surprise that the Hedges propose a marriage connection between the Hedges and Clabaughs. Just mentioning in case you run across any Hedges.

I live in Springfield IL which is only some 75 miles from where my Nicholas is buried. Come decent weather, I shall have to go up there and dig around, lliterally. Don't really expect to find a birth date, but there could be an age buried a little in the ground. Won't know til I look.

Your Nicholas has so many descendants looking for him, and mine has practically none. I do agree that they are surely closely related. Please let me know any thoughts or comments.

Best,
Chris Henderson
