Step #1
Forget all these "Sons of ......" and other organizations; at least, for now.
Step #2
Contact your nearest Regional Office of the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA). They have a generic toll-free number that rings into the office nearest you but it's always busy. It may be best to drop by personally. If neither of the above are practical, write:
Office of Memorial Programs (403A)
810 Vermont Ave., N. W.
Washington, DC20420-0001
Step #3
Request a VA FORM 40-1330
The DVA will engrave and ship a marker at no cost, HOWEVER, installation is up to YOU. This usually runs between $125 and $200 but this is the point where you can determine the "sincerety-to-lip service ratio" of a lot of these "Sons" and others. Pass the hat. Don't forget the local VFW & American Legion Posts, Military Order of the Purple Heart and DAV
Chapters, etc. It works more often than not but be prepared to foot the bill yourself just in case.
