Steve Lynn has identified the unit names but here is further information on the two companies:
Company B, 61st Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry was known as the Tattnall Rangers; Company H was known as the Tattnall County Volunteers.
Daniel H. Smith was a private in Company B. The service records may provide a clue as to why the elder Smith resigned his commission as Captain.
To learn how to obtain copies of the soldier's Military Compiled Service Records by mail from the National Archives go to http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/civilwar.htmlhttp://www.nara.gov/genealogy/civilwar.html. It is a lengthy page and you should read the whole article, but the part you want is about ¾ way down the page and is the section entitled "To obtain Civil War military service and pension records by mail".
If you live near Atlanta you may wish to (and should) visit the Georgia Department of Archives andHistory where you can also view and copy the service records as well as any pension applications. Also, in nearby East Point, Georgia you can visit the Southeastern Branch of the National Archives where you can view and copy the service records. Reservations are required for the latter.
You can also view the Georgia census records at either place. Both Smiths are enumerated in the 1870 census of Tatnall County.
