Joe,
Where did your Point Lookout POW ancestor enlist? Did he have any relatives in Wilkinson or Baldwin County, GA? My GG Grandfather Benjamin T. Cook and his brothers, William Harrison Cook and Henry Cook, all served the Confederacy. They were sons of John Cook and Martha Knight. Benjamin settled in Berrien County, GA after the War and Henry lived in Coffee County. William Harrison went to Alabama.
I've been to Point Lookout, MD. It's a bleak thought to realize how exposed the POWs were on the point. They had very little to protect them from the elements. And, it was a long walk home to GA when the they finally signed oaths of loyalty in June 1865, a couple of months after the war ended.
The cemetery and monuments to the men held at the camp are quite impressive, but they are outside the park area. I was somewhat saddened to know that the part of the actual area where men were held in such captivity is now a fishing dock.
Thank you for sharing information about your ancestor.
