Jerry,
The only Sherard (and various spellings) found in the NARA index of Confederate soldiers from any state with a given name close to Napoleon B. was Sherrod, S.N.B., Company A, 3rd Battalion North Carolina Senior Reserves and this assumes that the meaning for the initials "N.B." is Napoleon B.
In many cases the administration of an estate due to deaths near the start of, and during the war, was postponed due to the lack of a Probate Court judge, court clerk, appraisers, administrators or executors, or a combination of these. Often, cases will be found where probate was started before the war and suspended. Those were not ordinary times and and sometimes the normal paperwork, such as annual returns, was not filed or was never recorded.
There is a couple of things to check if you haven't already done so:
Did the widow make application for a Confederate Soldier's Widows Pension from the state? Are there any extant county tax records for the period? If the state is Alabama, the answer to the latter is "probably not". Has the 1860 Mortality Schedule for Alabama been checked?
Al
