Since you have his name, and know he served in a Pennsylvania regiment, determining with certainty which regiment he was in should be pretty simple. You will want to get copies of his Compiled Service Record. But you won't even need that to determine his regiment. The National Archives maintains an index to their Compiled Service Records.Actually, several indices (one for each state), all of which are on microfilm. The one you need has a really cumbersome name, which I can't remember exactly, but its something like the "Index of volunteer Union Soldiers who served in units from Pennsylvania during the Civil War."It should be film number M554.Anyway, find his name in the index, and it will identify for you his company and regiment, as well as beginning and ending rank.
Having gotten that far, you will then use that information to get the correct compiled service record from the archives. If you live near Washington, you can do this in person. If not, there's a form you can fill out and mail to NARA, and they'll copy the records and mail them to you.See the NARA webpage for more information:

Good luck in your search.
