Thank you for an interesting but confusing evening. I skimmed through the pension files for Peter Jenett last night and I must admit my head is spinning. You might consider a trial membership at fold3 as an alternative to sending for the records. There were over 325 pages and it would make a great mystery novel. All three women are mentioned and each one filed for the pension as you said. Eliza dropped her request but I am not sure why. Melissa did receive a pension until she died as did Harriet's sons until they reached adulthood. Harriet herself applied after her second husband Mr. Cole died but I'm not sure how that turned out. One of the women included letters said to have been written during the war by Peter to his family and there are witness testimonies to each women's claim. There are intensive interview records for Harriet whose claim was investigated the most. There were some files that suggested Peter left Melissa to take up with Harriet and others that Harriet and Eliza were the same person. One page even suggested that there was some Civil War identity theft going on and someone used Peter's name. I think I will read the records again tomorrow. Thak you for the adventure.
I think someone could get a great novel out of all the stories hidden in those 359 pages.
