An uncommon name, I found two Edson Harkness in the records, but a Corporal in the California 7th Infantry is not your man.

Edson Jesse Harkness enlisted 8-8-62 in the NY 9th Heavy Artillery,Co.B, as a corporal. He was discharged for promotion 9-19-63 to become captain of Company E, 6th USCT. The unit was formed at Camp William Penn near Philadelphia, PA. He was later promoted to a major by brevet on 5-13-65, and after the war he lived in Illinois.
