Edgar Mitchell 11/25/13
I found records of two S.F.Mitchell from Alabamma, and they seem to be the same individual. The first is of him joining Hilliard's 4th Infantry (also known as Hilliard's Legion).I states S.F. was in Company A, but the Legion was composed of battalions. The unit formed in 1862, and disbanded in 1864.Battalions 1 & 3 went with the AL 60th Infantry, while batallions 2 & 4 were absorbed into the 59th.I found a record for S.F. in the 59th, Company I.
Possibly some one else with specific knowledge of the units can explain why the "company" designations were recorded when the unit clearly was seperated into battalions.
