The fact that he enlisted using an alias does not mean that he was substituting for someone else. Aliases were used for many different reasons. The pension files might help to discover why he did it.

In the 1880 census he is listed as John Hollis so Loren (maybe Lorenzo) might be his middle name. You might want to look at the Joseph O. Hollis who lived in the same town as Loren. They may be brothers or cousins.
