The national archives have scant records of a James Greathouse from Virginia. Listed under James is VA mounted Infantry, 62nd Regiment, Company not known; and 5th Regiment, VA state Line, Co.I.

Under James A. is 20th Regiment,Cavalry, Co. B; and 19th Regiment Cavalry, Co.D.

I used Bing.com to search for Moccasin Rangers, and someone who seemed knowledgeable said those soldiers were incorporated into the 19th VA Cavalry, but only into Company A, so it would appear your ancestor was not one of the rangers.
