Chrissie,

Cavalry regiments that were on post duty such as the 9th were rarely sent out as a whole. Rather, they were sent out in detachments of various size depending on the need at the time. In the case of Sulphur Branch Trestle, the detachment was under the command of Major Eli Lilly (founder of the pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly and Company) who was among those captured. They lost 196 men killed, wounded, and missing. Many of the wounded were likely returned to duty. Those captured were sent to Cahaba Prison in Alabama. The rest of the regiment was still available after this time to participate in other operations.
