A longshot, but could he have wanted to serve with a relative? In the NC 6th were two other Mathis; William, age 19 at enlistment on 6-15-61, born Washington County, TN. William Bedford age 19 at enlistment on 6-21-61, born Alamance County, NC. However, Levi was in Company A, Wm in Company E, and Wm Bedford in Company K.
