A mistake was made sometime before 1940 identifying Zachariah Seward who served as the Senior 2nd Lieutenant in Company “E” Seventh Florida Infantry Regiment C.S.A. The service was incorrectly attributed to Zachariah G. Seward born in 1816. Credit should be given to his nephew born in April 1839 at Alabama. He was the son of Zachariah Groom Seward’s brother, Henry S. Seward. Zachariah was married about 1866 at Brooksville in Hernando County to Charlotte Cecelia Hope. He died about 1877 and is buried at the Old Brooksville Cemetery.
The compiled service records for Zachariah Seward indicate he had become ill in July 1862, and was furloughed to go home. Zachariah was not with Company “E” in November 1862 for roll call, but had returned by February 7th, 1863. He was examined by a military surgeon at Knoxville, Tennessee in May 1863, and allowed to resign his officer’s commission June 20th, 1863. In late 1863 or early 1864 he joined Captain Leroy G. Lesley’s home guard militia that was designated as Company “C” Third Battalion Florida Special Cavalry. This additional service with the Cow Cavalry in Florida was noted on his grave prior to 1940.
