It appears that your Hubbard did also serve in the 42nd Virginia. According to The Virginia Regimental Histories Series, he enlisted in Company D on 31 May 1861, at Yellow Branch in Campbell County. Records show that he was left sick at Edrey?? 23 Sep 1861, and that he was discharged 26 Jan 1862. Since he had not served even a full year, my guess is that he was discharged due to his illness. Perhaps he recovered his strength which led him to re-enlist in 1863 in the 21st Virginia, which was heavily recruiting at the time due to losses in previous battles. That's just reading between the lines, however.
Having two men with that unusual name in the same regiment can be quite confusing.
