Cathy,
The only help I seem to be able to offer is to keep you from going down the wrong road - not point you in the right direction. I have also found that the R.H. Carter who is buried at Marietta, GA was a 19 year old farmer from Kentucky when he enlisted in the 14th Kentucky Infantry (US), in 1861. If your man married in 1842, it is likely he was in his forties when the war started, and may not have served at all. Wish I could be of more assistance.
