Travel after discharge

My gr gr grandfather Sgt Harvey McCollum, ist Miss. Marine Brigade Inf. (U.S. Vols) was discharged at Vicksburg, MS at the end of Aug. 1864. Were soldiers free to make their own way home???
There is no trace of Harvey after his discharge order. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to search. He enlisted at Benton Barracks, MO. Would he had to have returned there to be released??
