Howards Regt. Nara M258 Record Group 109 Compiled service records of Confederate soldiers who served in organizations raised directly by the Confederate Govt.
3rd Confederate Cavalry was also known as Howards Regt. C.S. Cavalry. On the compiled service record catd of Col. Howard is also states that this regiment was also known by the following designations. 11th Battalion Alabama Cavalry, Howards Battalion Confederate Cavalry, Howard's Regiment Confederate Cavalry, 11th Confederate Cavalry, 13th Confederate Cavalry.
Confederate units formed by the govt. contained men men from different states. Cavalry is the toughest to sort out as you can tell from above. Also check records of regiments that might have been in the area where your ancestor joined the service. I found many Mississippi residents that joined units from Louisiana simply because they were recruiting while they were stationed in Mississippi. To give another example when you check the compiled service records of Douthat's Virginia Artillery (Botetourt), the only Virginia unit that fought in the Army of Tennessee,in the western theatre, a lot of the men were from Tennessee. Sorry about the long post.
