Daniel Benfer vs. David Benfer, Co. K, 51st PA Inf.

I have been researching the civil war history of Daniel Benfer and there seems to be some confusion at the National Archives as to Daniel's service.

While the Pennsylvania historical society; Historical Data System, and Bates all have Daniel listed as serving as a private in Co. K, 51st PA Infantry, the Archives only has records for a David Benfer as a private serving in Co. K, PA Infantry.

A descendant of Daniel's claims Daniel was a mail carrier during the civil war and was captured in order to get the mail and that he spent some time as a POW.

Hoping someone can help me solve this riddle.
