As for a John McLaughlin, 27 served Illinois, 349 served the Union in all states. As you have given us so little to search for, the possibilities are too great to identify him. The only McLaughlin in the Illinois 11th Cavalry (note spelling) was Michael. He enlisted on 3-5-65, right as the war was ending, and would not have had any exposure to conflict. He was from Rockford, Il (my birthplace a few years later).
