Hi Alice,
Thanks for the reply - any idea if I can just make an application with the info I have and quote T1099 and if so do you know what form I use. I've seen Standard Form 180 as well as NATF85. One of them (I don't have them in front of me at the moment) tells you to use the other for Navy records and on the back of that form it tells you to contact NARA (there's a web link) and this takes you to a general inquiry page !!!
I do know that Patrick 'enlisted' along with another brother Peter. My 'lead' if you like is with another brother John for whom I have a comprehensive pension file - he enlisted 19 April 1861 and served aboard USS Port Royal. Was thinking maybe the other brothers enlisted at the same time? Whilst I don't know this for sure I do know that Patrick was back in NYC in October 1865 because he was present at the reading of his father' probate whereas Peter wasn't - his location was given as Charleston - hadn't been mustered out at that time possibly? There is a letter (12 May 1861) in the pension file that John wrote to three brothers - Patrick and Peter appear to be at either West Point or some location containing 'Randal' (it's unclear) and another brother Felix was in NYC (I know for fact he did not serve).
I'm only concentrating on Patrick at the moment for the simple reason that he ALWAYS used the middle initial F which should help narrow things down if that turns up in a navy record. I feel like I don't have enough for Peter. Patrick died 1918 in Ohio and Peter died 1882 in NYC.
I'm thinking however that any application wouldn't be specific enough - any thoughts?
Patrick F. O'Neil, born 1844 Ireland, enlisted sometime April/May 1861 in NYC and back in NYC by October 1865.
Michael.
