Compiled service records for Confederates are available from www.footnote.com.I don't recall the subscription cost, but it's not bad.
Here's his record from the 46th:
John R. B. Johnson
Private, Capt. Croft’s Company, Alabama Volunteers (later Company D, 46th AL Infantry)
Enlisted for three years service on 2 Apr 1862 Tallapoosa County, AL
Captured 17 May 1863 at Big Black River (east of Vicksburg, MS) and paroled 4 Jul 1863
A Confederate roll dated 27 Jun 1863 notes him missing as of 16 May 1863 at Bakers Creek
Roll dated 19 Jul 1863 of paroled prisoners of the 46th, marked as “present”
Receipt for clothing received 3 Aug 1863
Receipt for clothing received for the second quarter of 1864.
There is a clothing receipt dated January 1862 that has his signature on it.Let me know if you’d like me to email it to you.
Good luck,
Scott
