My gggrandfather, Lt. Col. William Henry Griffin, commanded the 21st Infantry Battalion (Griffin's Battalion) who participated in the re-capture of Galveston on 1 Jan 1863.This battalion consisted primarily of west Texas frontiersmen (Griffin owned a farm in Tarrant Co.)They periodically participated in the defense of the Texas Coast, including Galveston, but primarily served around the Sabine river area. This battalion was rolled into Spaight's battalion in Nov. of 1864 and remained in that area also.I am also searching for more information about the battalion and understand that certain university archives in Texas may have specific info. However, I haven't been able to get down there to poke around yet.A very interesting web site which includes information concerning the Civil War in Texas can be found at http://block.dynip.com/wtblockjr/
Hope this tidbit helps some. Good luck!
