During his recent speech Senator Obama commented on his ancestry and mentioned that his wife was descended from white slave holders. However the Senator made no mention of his own ancestors from that era. Some of us hope that Senator Obama will have a conciliatory attitude toward the nations past. I have found in my experience that descendants of the Grand Army of the Republic, and Sons of Confederate Veterans have a mutual respect. Perhaps it is not too much to expect that Barack Obama will be willing to defuse the politicized animosities that so many politicians seem to thrive on. It is good to know that Senator Obama is the son of a Union Veteran. Perhaps he will be magnanimous enough to understand that we who descend from Southern Veterans also admire the Courage and fortitude of our own ancestors. We need to respect each other. If he becomes president, I have hopes that he will mean what he says about respect and conciliation.
