Hi Don,
I have two confederate ggg-uncles who were captured and imprisoned at Rock Island and subsequently one of them enlisted in the 2nd U.S. Volunteers. The southern men were given the promise that they would serve on the western frontier, and not go south to fight their neighbors and kinfolk. My uncle Tilman Hammett, was sent to Ft. Riley Kansas with Co."G" 2nd U.S. Vol. Inf. His bro. Perry remained as a POW at Rock Island until the end of the war.
There is a Confederate Cemetery maintained on the island with over 1700 marked graves. I had the good fortune to visit it this summer. If you get the chance I recommend seeing it and the arsenal meuseum 1st hand.
You might find the DEE BROWN book "GALVANIZED YANKEES"
as useful and interesting as I did. Best Wishes, Charlie
