In Tennessee many of the oldest cemeteries have native eastern red cedar trees in them. There may have been other plants at one time, but the cedars are the survivors.I live in an antebellum house, and from the oldest photos we have of the house, a cedar was the only tree in the yard.It is still standing strong although it was hit by lightning about 50 years ago.
Andrew Jackson used these native cedars to line his driveway at the Hermitage outside Nashville. It was still going strong until it was hit by a tornado a few years ago.
Magnolias are wonderful but they spread to a huge size, they loose those giant leaves in the spring, and their roots may tear up tombstones.
A wonderful old antebellum cemetery across the road from me has vinca growing all over it. It keeps down the weeds and is gorgeous when it blooms. There are also lots of daffodils planted there.
I think it is wonderful that you are preserving the old cemetery!
