Rob, I had the same problem you are having. My ancestor had such a common name and there were several of them in the Mississippi units.
I wrote down all the units that had a William Lyons or a variation of the name in them.
I went to the LDS Library catalog on their website and found the units that had a man with my ancestors name. I wrote down the microfilm numbers and took them to my library and it cost me about $2. a film to get sent to my library on interlibrary loan.
You have more info than most people, you know where he was in 1860.
I found the man that matched my ancestor with the county he enlisted and ruled out all the others because they enlisted on the other side of the state.
I found his pension application and it proved I had the right unit and man.
If you live in a big city you may even have your own LDS library you can order from. You don't have to go through NARA, that is expensive and takes forever.
