Not much help here Betty, my best guess is Samuel Turner was with the 20th Regiment, Texas Infantry (Elmore's)
I say this because the unit was organized in Galveston in the summer of 1862 and the unit had a high percentage of middle-aged men in which Mr. Turner would have been. They also provided guard duty along the Texas coast from Galveston to the Sabine River. And I do show a Samuel Turner in this organization.
To verify or confirm this I suggest you contact NARA and order his Complied Military Service Record.Otherwise known as CMSR.Generally speaking they cost $37.00 and have a wealth of information about the ancestor.
Probably like you I find Pleasant Turner to have vanished after the 1860 Census. At the time of the War people used the name Pleas to refer to men of this name.
I am on a two week visit to this site and probably will NOT join. You may contact me at [email protected] if you have any further questions.
