I may have identified his service. The Soldiers & Sailors System lists 13 William Rice serving MS.It also lists quite a few more where the middle initial is known, including two with "R".On served with the 10th MS Infantry, but it was organized in Jackson, and Panola was not a known county where men enlisted in this unit.
Panola men did enlist in the other, the 29th MS Infantry. This was organized in Corinth.A "William R. King" enlisted as a private, and was mustered into Company C.
For further information, I suggest you contact the MS Archives for his military record, as well as have them search for a pension record. His wife may not have been eligible for a pension with her remarrriage, but their children should have been eligible.
