1st (Farenholt's) Virginia Reserves
I'm hoping one of our Confederate experts can provide some basic information or resources for this unit.I'm researching a man who's Compiled Service Record says he enlisted in the 1st (Farenholt's) Virginia Reserves in January 1865.I've found 2 hospital registers that show the man being admitted to Chiborazzo Hospital (in Richmond) in early February 1865, so I am guessing the regiment was then serving somewhere in the Richmond/Petersburg defenses.
I have been able to confirm that there actually was a regiment called the 1st Virginia Reserves-- it appears in the "Virginia Rosters".Other than that, this seems to be something of a stealth regiment...totally invisible.I can't even confirm correct the spelling of the commander's name.I've found it as Farenholt, and also as Fairenholt. The only other hint I have is from the man himself, who in a document long after the war said he served in "Farenholt's regiment, Walker's brigade."There were, unfortunately, several "Walker's" brigades in the Confederate army.I suspect the one in question is the former Pegram's brigade, which I've found listed as Walker's Brigade in Gordon's command at Appomatox. But at Appomatox there's no mention of the 1st Virginia Reserves being part of the brigade.Sooo...
Can anybody provide any details about this unit's organization and history?Know what happened to them?
