Thanks. The info does help some, especially where these men resided. I am actually looking for personal biographical data.
There are some errors in the records.
The action at Day's Gap, Alabama occurred on the morning of April 30, 1863 when forces under the command of Gen. Nathan B. Forrest attacked the Federal column. Forrest himself was not present at that particular action. The Confederate forces were led by Col. Philip D. Roddey, 4th Ala. Cavalry, until Forrest arrived on the field as the fighting at Day's Gap came to a close. Sheets was senior captain present in the 51st Indiana and in command of the regiment that day. McHolland was next in line and assumed command when Sheets fell mortally wounded. McHolland's promotions caught up with him in Libby Prison at Richmond, Virginia.
Only the officers were confined to prison. Privates and non-coms went to Belle Isle, then City Point, Virgina and finally to Camp Chase, Ohio before the end of May where they remained until formally exchanged.
Streight surrendered his command to Gen. Forrest on the Widow Lawrence plantation about mid morning May 3, 1863. The place of surrender is on present day Ala. Highway # 9 about 5 miles east of Cedar Bluff. The location is also 6 or 7 miles south of Gaylesville mentioned in the records. They were also 5 miles short of the Ala. - Ga. border. You will also see some of the records showing the surrender at Rome, Ga. After the surrender ceromonies Forrest went onto Rome with the Federals where the paroles were issued.
