Scott,
I suggest you go through the National Archives in Washington DC, to get a copy of his military and pension records if you have enough information.Do you know where he is buried, wife's name, or where he lived?You can get application forms at larger libraries or look up the National Archives web site that is on line.First, you'll have to order the proper forms and it takes a separate form for his pension record and a separate one for his military record.You can order up to a maximum of 5 forms at one time.The pension records are a good source for family ancestry, names of dependent children, names of wives, etc.
