Mark,
Since I posted my original message, I have obtained a copy of Elam F. Farmer's CMSR. He enlisted on September 9, 1862 in Atlanta. He was to serve for one year and receive pay of $11 per month.
There were no Stovalls listed in the Randolph County Census for 1860.
I am going to resolve this by obtaining a copy of the "loyalty oath" that E.F. Stovall of Walton County signed in 1868 and compare the signature with that appearing on the enlistment papers for Elam F. Stovall of the 5th GVI.
By the way, that book you looked at does not include the most important Stovall from Walton County - my gg-grandfather Alvin D. Stovall of the 64th GVI, Co. K.
Cheers,
Jerry
