Steve: You appear to be quite helpful, so maybe you can answer a few questions. I have (what appears to be) a pay record with my g.g. grandfather's name, William Pendleton, on it. It says, at the top, Company B 23 NY Inf. There are about six lines with seven digit numbers on each line. At the bottom it says "See also 80 NY Inf."
At the library I found that the 23rd NY Inf (Volunteers) were mustered out 5/31/1863. William Pendleton b. 1818, would have been in his mid-forties and had five children at that time. Would they have drafted/accepted him as a volunteer at that age?
I have contacted the National Archives for form NATF #86 to locate his records (I just found out about that service this morning).
The "pay record" I mentioned. Do you know of someone who could verify what it is?
His family was from Cattaraugus County NY, so I am guessing that is where he volunteered--- even though he lived across the border in McKean County PA. Is there a site for a "history" of the 23rd NY that would have more explicit info?
Thanks in advance for your help. Jim Pendleton
