Ken,
The "Frontier Cavalry",of which the26th NY Cavalry was a part of, was organized in the states of NY,MA and VT,to serve on the Northern Frontier as the "Frontier Guard" under a special authority of the War Dept. Companies G,H,I,K, and L were from the NY counties of St.Lawrence, Jefferson, Lewis, Franklin, Clinton, Essex, and Erie. The regt was designed to guard against raids from across the Canadian frontier by any hostile elements based in Canada.MA provided 5 companies into the Frontier Cav.,apparently company C was one of them, and I was unable to find any Vermont info.
They organized from 12/1864,mustered in Feb,1865 into US service, instead of state service, and the NY men mustered out from 7/1/1865 to 7/7/1865,depending on the company they were in(at many locations), and the MA men mustered out 6/30/1865.
Hope this helps explain the peculiar circumstances.
