Don,
I hear you, I truly do.
My ELias (the younger)went from Tennessee to Illinois and on to Arkansas where he died.
He fought for the Union in the Civil War and am told that he decided to leave Tennessee because of all the grief he got over fighting for the "wrong side."
I was living in Arizona in 1987 when I went to visit my paternal grandparents in Colorado.I had just started my research and it dawned on me that people don't live forever (duh!) so, despite the fact that I had not seen them in 10 years - off I went.
Good thing. It was the last I ever saw my grandmother alive. While I was there she told me tha the woman I had always believed to be her mother was actually her step-mother and that her "real" mother, Roena CHURCHWELL had died in childbirth when my grandmother was only 4 years old.
I was shocked beyond words. The only thing my grandmother could tell me was that Roena had been a very tiny woman, wore a size three shoe, was buried in Seymour, Indiana and had been an orphan.
That was ALLI had to go on.
It tok me ten years but I found out all about Roena and her family which led me to close (relatively:)family in Tennessee.
What a journey this has been! But, as I said (and thankfully you agree!) I need proof of the Elder Elias CHURCHWELL's parentage.
I can document Roena and her siblings but the early, early stuff is driving me nuts.
Because of the fact that (no matter what)they made sure to keep the name of Ephraim inthe family, I am betting that our guys are related in some way.
Some times the only thing to do is GO to the county in question and do real digging.
I talked to one of the guys at the historical society in Carroll County but he said he had nothng more on Elias except what I had read in the "Tennessee Tidbits" article.
I've already proved that to be wrong. There was more!I just had to dig.
We go to Lexington, Tennessee about twice a year to visit Churchwell relatives.I am hoping to sneak in an extra day next time we run ove there to go to Carroll County.
